Writing:
In class you have been learning about writing reports and most of you have nearly completed a report on a NZ native bird or animal. As we discussed in class today I would like you to write another report on a topic of your choice - some suggestions today were the Ranfurly Shield, America's Cup, a famous NZer - the sky is the limit! Again I recommend using the www.christchurchcitylibraries.com website. Click into the Kids tab and then go to the Homework Zone. Obviously there are a lot of great resources around - wikipedia is great but do not cut and paste huge chunks of information eg
- 1975 Wife Louise and daughter Belinda killed in plane crash in Nepal.
This could be written as -' In 1975 Sir Edmund Hillary's wife and daughter died in a plane crash.'
or 'Sir Edmund Hillary's wife and daughter were killed in a plane crash in 1975.'
Writing should be in full sentences not bulletpoints as above.
This may be done on a PC on Word or as a Google Doc. Pictures, maps etc may be included. I would expect at least four, preferably five, paragraphs.

5/6KF Maths - a lot of boys did not complete Worksheet 16 which was very disappointing considering how much time you were given. This must be completed tonight by all boys who were unable to come to my class at lunch today due to chess. The '%'s on the numberline' and 'Percentage Problems' worksheets are due tomorrow. There is a test on fractions, decimals and percentages on Thursday - please look through your book and check if there is anything you would like to review prior to the test.

Spelling - list words in alphabetical order. 5 definitions - herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, budget, interest (in relation to money). 10 words (most of these are re-learns from recent spelling tests and/or dictation - long o and a sounds). This work is to be completed by Wednesday.
5/6 KF Maths - MSM2 Page 255 - 257, Exercise 2-4 (odd numbers only), Exercise 5 (all), Exercise 7 and 8 even numbers only. This seems like a lot but some boys are not utilising class time.
Social Science: Our focus this term is on 'Financial Literacy'. Some boys are working on their iPads , and ideally will have 'created' a new book using Book Creator, and some are working in their books. By now the following should be completed:
- Financial Literacy title page. I have encouraged the boys to complete this as a PicCollage but hand or computer generated is fine.
- The financial terms and meanings vocab sheet. This should be glued into book or photographed on their iPad and copied into Book Creator.
- The Cost of Pets - boys should have explained the difference between a set-up and an ongoing cost and provided examples of these using the 'Pet-Care Costs' sheet handed out in class. Many boys have started this on Popplet. Once completed the boys can export this (save to their photos) and then insert into their Book Creator.
- Todays work (this will be Tuesday's work for 5/6KF so don't panic). After our discussions on the differences between goods and services boys needed to:

They then need to explain the difference between a good and a service and provide at least 5 examples of each.

Google 'christchurch city library kids - nz native birds and animals'. Select one of the birds or animals and 'bookmark' it. Read through the information- this is a great site as is written in 'kids language' - it is easy to understand and we will be using this as a basis for report writing.

WOTD is exemplary
The only other prep is Social Science. We started Financial Literacy today and the boys have an initial vocabulary vocabulary list - they need to match words and meanings from a sheet they have been given. They may need some help with this as we have only had an initial discussion. Dictionary use is also to be encouraged! If they have an iPad they need to take a photo of the vocab sheet and drop it into the Financial Literacy document they started today - which SHOULD be in their Social Science folder on the Google Drive.
On that note boys need to make sure any work they complete on the iPad is in the correct folder eg Spelling, WOTD etc is in English

100 Year Celebration of the Wiremu Building
Wiremu
(the big white building) was built in
1913 so next week-end marks 100 years on site – at that stage Heretaunga moved
to the site. Hereworth was formed by the joining of Hurworth and Heretaunga
schools in 1927. For the first two weeks of Term 2 we will be focusing on our
school and its history before moving onto Financial Literacy in Week 3.
Homework
task: Using our existing crest/coat of
arms and the 6 cornerstones of Hereworth
school as a reference, design a new crest/coat of arms. This can be done by
hand or on the computer but must be of display quality to go on the wall. An
explanation of the features you have included must be provided. Due Wednesday 7
